Austrian Power Grid AG (APG) commissions Powerlines Energy Austria GmbH with two construction lots on the Ennstal line renovation project

The existing 220kV line between Wagrain and Weißenbach, which is around 75 years old, will be renewed and future-proofed by the end of 2027. Powerlines Energy Austria, a specialist in the planning and construction of energy transmission infrastructure, has been commissioned by APG AG to carry out work on two construction lots.

After more than 75 years in operation, APG AG is comprehensively refurbishing the 220kV Ennstal line between Wagrain and Weißenbach. The Ennstal line is a key east-west connection in Austria’s energy grid and ensures a sustainable energy supply for industry, tourism, and residents in the region.
The line is also a key means of ensuring implementation of the energy transition, and the ongoing integration of renewable energies into the Austrian energy mix.

As part of the general refurbishment, all line components—from towers and foundations to earthing, fittings, and conductors—will be thoroughly modernised. The voltage level will remain at 220kV, but the existing single conductor will be replaced with a two-bundle conductor system. This will increase transmission capacity while reducing line noise.

Powerlines Energy Austria has been contracted with the dismantlement of 95 towers in the two commissioned construction lots, and with the installation of new ones in the same locations along a route of around 29km. Subsequently, around 350km of conductor cables and 60km of earthing wires are to be installed on the new towers.

Our team possesses all the requisite know-how and technical expertise to implement this project safely and reliably, looking back across over 20 years of experience in the implementation of complex line construction projects – especially in alpine terrain. Up to 60 experienced Powerlines Energy Austria specialists will be involved in the project during the various project phases. Construction is scheduled to commence in spring 2026 and be completed by the end of 2027.

Berthold Bartsch, CEO of the Powerlines Group: “I would like to congratulate our Powerlines Energy Austria team on landing this major project. I am particularly pleased with such a significant order intake following the recent successes implementing other major projects for APG, such as the Salzburg line and the Weinviertel line. So, I would like to thank our customer APG for placing their trust in us yet again.”
